John era o cerebral, Paul era o certinho, Ringo era o engraçado, George era o místico. Você imaginaria que quatro moços do mesmo lugar, com a mesma origem social e, afinal, com gostos musicais tão parecidos que tinham se juntado numa banda, não poderiam ser muito diferentes. Mas o sucesso dos Beatles talvez se devesse a essa diferença. A banda representava uma coisa - um arquétipo, os anseios e as necessidades de uma época -, e cada um dos seus membros representava outra. E cada um foi ser a sua outra coisa. John o guru vanguardeiro e, no fim, trágico, Paul o aristocrata semicareta, Ringo a personalidade internacional e George o que mesmo? Confesso que não acompanhei o envelhecimento dos Beatles com muita atenção, principalmente depois que John parou de envelhecer. As pessoas e as coisas que têm um significado muito forte em certas fases de nossas vidas só existem depois para lembrar como tudo passa. Sobrevivem como grotescos: são a coisa e a sua lembrança, a pessoa e o seu fantasma, ao mesmo tempo. George, pelo pouco que sei, continuou o mais sério e introvertido dos Beatles, inclusive na sua música. Também parou de envelhecer. No fim sobraram os Beatles mais superficiais, as duas partes dos Beatles que significavam menos. O que também deve significar alguma coisa.
